With a history stretching back to the 1820s, this country park between Marple and Romiley has everything needed for a wholesome day out.
Growing steadily from its mill and manmade lake days, the park now covers an impressive 200 acres and lies at the heart of the Etherow-Goyt Valley. The park also marks the start of The Goyt Way — a 10-mile trail towards Whaley Bridge.
Interestingly, Etherow was one of Britain’s first country parks — but it’s not just a slice of history you’ll find in this impressive space. Home to over 200 species of plants, if you love the smell of wild garlic or a bit of good old fashioned blueberry picking, you’re in for a treat on this trail.
If you’re after a slightly more challenging stroll, a trip to the Keg is a must. Follow the main path the to the park’s waterfall, and as you approach the weir restroom, turn left and head uphill.
Continue along the path until you cut through Keg Wood — from here, you can extend the walk by bearing left towards Sunny Corner woods, or traverse down the steps to the right and straight to the keg.
Follow the route through the rhododendron tunnel, and stop off at the bench overlooking Keg Pool to enjoy the view!
On your way back towards the car, follow the route around the waterfall and uphill slightly for a truly fairytale pitstop — a wonderful little spot for little ones and big kids alike.
