The Fallowfield Loop

An off-road cycle path part of the National Cycle Network

Running from Gorton to Chorlton, this 8-mile long route is a great way to see some hidden Mancunian gems.

From Debdale Reservoir to The Secret Lake in Levenshulme, this traffic-free trail really does make you forget that you’re in the centre of some of Greater Manchester’s most urban suburbs.

The loop follows the route of the former Fallowfield railway line which closed in 1988. Even today, it’s marked on Google Maps in the same way as a railway line and passes a short way above the Fallowfield marker.

Before becoming The Manchester Cycleway, the old line had lain derelict for many years until the late 90s, when a group of cyclists started campaigning for its conversion to a traffic-free greenway.

Props to them, because today The Friends of Fallowfield Loop keep the route well maintained — with some parts even modified to be fully accessible for tandems.

Heading eastward, you’ll pass Highfied Country Park, Debdale and the Ashton Canal — where you can join up with Veledrome and City’s stadium.

Along the way, you’ll also pass the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust Donkey Sancturary in Abbey Hey. You’ll also find a map produced by The Friends of Fallowfield Loop showing further points of interest —including three sculptures near Highfield Country Park.
